SMK Syed Alwi's chefs clinch top prize in cook-off

2009/10/20

ALOR STAR: Aspiring chefs from SMK Syed Alwi in Kangar, Perlis, clinched the top spot in the 2009 national-level cooking competition for secondary schools yesterday.

The school's team of Form Three students, Fatin Raudhah Ahmad Nizar, Nurul 'Afifah Dzulkfli and Syifa Rosli, won the hearts of the judges with their picnic dishes -- Ideal Steamed Fish Pais, Cukup Rasa Tuna Bread, Low Fat Fruit Salad and Young Coconut Mango Pudding.

The school won RM3,000 (including RM1,000 for its Home Economics fund), a challenge trophy, Maggi hampers, cookware and certificates.

The challenge theme was "4 Healthy Recipes for a Picnic".

The chefs' teacher, Sarimah Saad, said the winning menu was the result of brainstorming with the students and another teacher, adviser Puridah Mat Amin.

"We browsed through recipes which I learnt when I was still in school and we came up with four recipes that were simple, delicious, nutritious and best suited the challenge theme," she said.

SMK Jeneri, Jeniang Kedah, was the runner-up and won RM2,500, while Pahang's SMK Seri Bahagia, Temerloh, was in third place and received RM2,000.

SMK Serting Hilir Kompleks of Bandar Seri Jempol, Negri Sembilan, won the "Iron Chef Challenge" with its Pumpkin Chicken Ball with Fusion Chilli Sauce and Homemade Mayo Special.

Its team won RM300, a medal and certificates in the battle, in which contestants were required to create a nutritious impromptu dish using a secret ingredient and Maggi products that were revealed just before the cook-off.

The cooking competition was jointly organised by Maggi and the Ministry of Education to instill interest in Home Economics, an elective subject in the secondary school Integrated Life Skills curriculum.

Since its launch in 1997, more than 8,000 secondary schools have entered the heats for the district and state levels.

This year, 16 schools representing 16 states and territories competed in the grand finals.

Next year's challenge will be hosted by Johor.
